1/72 Hessian Musketeer Regiment

Hessians

According to the magnificent book; “An illustrated Encyclopedia of uniforms from 1775-1783; The American Revolutionary war”, Hessians had a tradition of military service and were frequently sent as mercenaries. They were hired by Great Britain during the Jacobite Rebellion in 1745.
The relation between some of the German states was very intense in the 18th Century, with the Westminster alliance between Great Britain and Prussia in 1756, and the establishment  of the Hannover dynasty in great Britain from 1714 to 190s1.
Some German states sent troops to join the British, as the Brunswick but the bulk were troops from Hesse-Cassel. Nearly 30.000 German soldiers fought in America.

Structure

The Hesse-Cassel infantry regiment in 1776 was organizated with a regimental staff and five companies. Each infantry company had four officiers, service and 105 privates. Ihave made my unit with the same structure as the a British regiment.
There were four types of infantry Regiments; Musketeer, Fusilier, Granadiers and Garrison.
In the scheme from the suplement of Black powder Rebellion, we can find what type of infantry is each unit, and their facing and metal color, and the pompom-tufts color too.
We had two more schemes, more detailed from the book “An illustrated Enciclopedia of uniforms from 1775-1783. The American Revolutionary war”,
In this page we can find the images, in low resolution, but enough for 1/72 scale of the flasgs of the main units.

Estructura

Uniforms.

The uniform of these units has no great differences with the British troops, as all European armies had their uniforms inspired upon those of Prussia. So I´m going to use the Accurate-revell- Imex reference for building my first unit.
But the main difference was the hat used for each type of infantry unit…

Hats

Musketeer and Garrrison units; In this image, with drawing taken from the same book, we can observe that Musketeer and Garrison units used the cocked hat, so we can use the same reference that we use for the British. (Accurate-revell- Imex). The only transformation we need is to add the pom-poms over them.

Fusilers; Wore metal caps, fronted with the regimental “metal color” ; we cannot obtain this caps from any reference in 1/72, perhaps we can transform the heads of the poses of grenadiers from the Austrian Revell seven, and more directly from the poses of the Prussians grenadiers of the reference Revell Prussian infantry (because although  they represent grenadiers caps, they are smaller than usual. And why not using the whole figure? The Austrian are very well sculpted, being the Prussians very thin I think; the problem it´s the height; in this image you can compeer them to the Accurate English figures.
Granadiers; Wore metal caps as the fusiliers but taller. We can obtain these head from some references of grenadiers; As I said the caps of the Grenadiers of the Seven years war, Revell Prussian infantry, are very small; I prefer the reference of Italery, 6006 "Russians Grenadiers” for the Napoleonic period they are very well sculpted, including pom-poms

Using Hat seven years war prussians?

The range of seven year war from Hat ( Set 8280 7YW Prussian Infantry Marching, Set 8281 7YW Prussian Infantry Action82827YW Prussian Infantry Command may be solve all our necessities not only to conform the Prussians but the British and American regulars; they have poses for the central companies, for the command stands, and all the set have a range of interchanging  hats to form all types of troops (cocked hats plus caps for fusiliers and grenadiers…they are well molded; so are they the solutions? For my there is a unsolvable problem; they are too big;  it´s not only for the height, but because the width…the reference with the Infantry Command contains figures shorter than the other two, so perhaps they are more compatible. Some people use them along with the seven year war range of  Revell Also in the big side), with good results...

Musketeer unit, “Leib Regiment”

For my first hessians unit I have chosen one easy one; one musketeer unit; “Leib Regiment”, in this way I can use the accurate English infantry with his cocked hat, adding only the pom-poms. His facing color is yellow, as well as his small clothes color.
His flag is very colorful, in yellow and red.
I have used practically only one pose for al the units, including the standard bearer, only the musician and the official, who is greeting warmly are made using other poses
I have turned some heads and substituted same arms for adding variety..and I have added a dog too in one of the stand for breaking the monotony…
At first I painted then as I ´m doing with the rest of units of this periods, but I realized that they were dark and I repainted the main colors for getting them more vivid.

Go  ahead comrades¡ this American forests don´t presage anything goog…Only God and Burgoyne know our Destiny…
